Memory

DSM runs more containers, virtual machines and cache with more memory, and Synology only supports its own modules. Each listing names the NAS models it fits; if yours is not there, ask us before you order.

Match the module to the model

Synology publishes exactly which modules each NAS accepts, and DSM warns when it sees anything else. The module code tells you the type: D4ES01 and D4ES02 are DDR4 ECC SO-DIMMs for Plus and xs+ models, D4EC-2666 and D4ER02 are ECC UDIMM and RDIMM for RackStation xs+ and FlashStation, D4NESO and D4NS are non-ECC SO-DIMM for Value models. Every listing here names the compatible models; if yours is not listed, ask before ordering.

Why upgrade

More memory means more containers and virtual machines, a bigger file cache and smoother Synology Photos indexing. Most Plus models ship with 2 to 8GB and accept 16 to 32GB.
