DiskStation

Desktop NAS

DiskStation is the desktop range: quiet enough for a living room, capable enough to run a company's file server, backups, surveillance and private cloud from one box. Pick the bay count that fits the data you have now and the drives you will add later.

How to read a DiskStation model number

DS925+: the first digit after DS is the maximum number of bays including expansion (9 here, 4 in the chassis plus a DX525), the next two are the model year, and the suffix is the tier. j is the entry level, no suffix is the Value series, + is Plus with faster CPUs and expansion support, neo+ is the newest Plus revision, and xs+ is the performance tier with ECC memory and 10GbE.

Which DiskStation do I need?

  • Two bays (DS223j, DS223, DS225+) for a household or a two-to-five person team: mirrored drives, backups for every device, Synology Photos and Drive.
  • Four bays (DS423, DS425+, DS925+) for a small office or a serious home: three drives of usable space plus one of protection with SHR, room for a cache SSD, Docker and virtual machines on the Plus models.
  • Five to eight bays (DS1525+, DS1825+) for a business with growing data, surveillance or virtualisation: more spindles, dual LAN and expansion to 15 or 18 bays.
  • XS+ (DS1823xs+, DS3622xs+) for video teams and virtualisation: 10GbE, ECC memory and the throughput to act as primary storage.

Drives are sold separately

Every DiskStation ships diskless. Current models support Synology's own HAT3300 Plus and HAT5300 Enterprise drives, and the 25-series Plus models will only create storage pools on drives from Synology's compatibility list. Add drives to the same order and we will ship them together.
